Plugin enables chat users to silence and block other chat users, bolstering ChatEngine’s focus on safety and moderation
San Francisco, CA – November 14, 2018 – PubNub, the company behind the world’s leading real-time Data Stream Network (DSN), today announced a Muter plugin for ChatEngine, giving chat users fine-grain control over who can send them chat messages and who cannot.
Muting functionality is an expected feature of any chat application today, both for one-to-one private chat and for public chat feeds with potentially thousands of participants. Chat users expect and demand safety controls to silence and block other individual users directly.
Muter joins ChatEngine’s already comprehensive suite of safety and moderation features. ChatEngine gives developers access to integratable partner Blocks, which are pre-built components that run serverlessly in the PubNub network. This includes Sift Ninja, a service that analyzes chat messages for vulgarity, bullying, racism, and abuse, and automatically blocks the message from being received; as well as Neutrino Profanity Filter, which detects profane words and automatically censors them.
Ensuring safety and moderation is a growing challenge for chat services. A 2017 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 73 percent of adults had seen someone harassed in some way online, with 40 percent personally experiencing abuse on the internet.
It’s not hard to find recent stories of both private and public chat feeds dealing with abuse and bullying. Last month, NSPCC, Britain’s leading abuse charity, had to cancel their Facebook Live discussion that was going to cover how parents should talk to kids about staying safe from abuse when the chat was overwhelmed by a flood of transphobic comments. And earlier this year, Instagram added filters for online bullying in their live comments feed, identifying comments on appearance or threatening remarks and removing them before they are published.
